The square knot is the easiest knot you will learn in Scouting. The square knot is used to join two different ropes of the same diameter. For this reason, it is also known as the friendship knot. If you need to join two ropes that will need to hold up under tension or need to use ropes of different diameters you should consider a different knot. A common spoken tool to remember how to tie this knot is "Right over left, then left over right." While the square knot is a simple knot, it is also easy to mistakenly tie an incorrect knot in the process.
